Our collaboration partner, Jan Holmgren, is awarded the world’s greatest vaccine prize

This week, Dr. Jan Holmgren received the 24th annual Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award in honor of his pioneering work in mucosal immunology and leadership in the development the world’s first oral cholera vaccine. Awarded annually since 1994, the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award recognizes a researcher who has made extraordinary contributions in the field of vaccinology or a complementary field.

The 2017 Gold Medal Award ceremony took place at the National Institute of Science Building in Washington, DC. Swedish Ambassador to the United States Björn Lyrvall attended the ceremony in recognition of Dr. Holmgren’s accomplishment as the first Swedish scientist to be awarded the Sabin Gold Medal.

Dr. Holmgren is currently a professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden; he is also the founding director of the University of Gothenburg Vaccine Research Institute.
